Virginia Virtual Academy prepares your child for success!
 | IntroductionThe Virginia Virtual Academy is a virtual school for students in grades K-8. It is located in Herndon, Virginia. It is part of the Carroll County Public School System and uses the K12 curriculum to teach with. The K12 curriculum is developed by a company called K12. It is based out of Northern Virginia. It develops high quality online curriculum for virtual public and private schools. Their mission is "to develop each child’s full potential with engaging, individualized learning" (Virginia Virtual Academy, 2012) In addition to providing individualized learning, as an online public school program of Carroll County Public Schools, Virginia Virtual Academy provides the structure, administrative support, oversight, accountability, and testing required of all public schools. Virginia Virtual Academy opened in September of 2009. It is the only virtual school program in the state of Virginia. Greg Smith, the Superintendent of Carroll County Schools, (2010) states, “When we started this program we had 30 students, now have close to 400 students." He goes on to state that “This program is all online. Students get their lesson plans, do their assignments and take tests through the program's website. A parent watches over them, and then a Virginia licensed teacher grades their work and tracks the students’ progress.” (Carroll County Schools, 2010) Virginia Virtual Academy is a full time public school program. Tution is free but students residing outside the Carroll County Public School district have to pay an annual registration fee. Apart from teaching the core curriculum and core subjects it offers a robust advanced learner program and range of extracurricular activities. All their classes are taught by experienced, high quality certified teachers. |
