Regulatory Environment



 



Virginia Virtual Academy is a public school program and students are required to engage in school work each day. They are also required to take The Standards of Learning Assessments (SOL) a standardized test mandated by the state of Virginia.

In addition to the SOL, students also need to participate in:

Lesson assessments

Unit assessments

Semester assessments

DIBELS – K-2 reading assessments

Online synchronous conferencing with the teacher

Phone conferencing with the teacher

How is student progress assessed?

"The Virginia Virtual Academy K-8 program is a mastery-based program, which means students master concepts and lessons before moving on to the next lesson. Following NCLB and state guidelines, students are expected to make at least a year’s growth in a year’s time. Teachers will assess mastery and provide feedback to students and families." (Virginia Virtual Academy, 2012)

Students are also required to:

Attend classes each day. Each student has to log into the class using his own personal identification number.  

Complete a year’s course work within a year’s time as required by the Virginia state law.

Have 990 hours of instructional time per calendar year.

Complete the assigned classwork, assignments, and assessments by the end of the year.

Demonstrate 80% mastery of the topics in the core subjects to be promoted to the next grade
